Deep Sea Exploration - Children's Literature

What lurks beneath the ocean? Dive in and explore. Through the use of striking color photography, this book transports readers underneath the sea to the inky ocean floor. The book’s overall design, along with the narrative, creates an authentic underwater experience. It is fast-paced and truly extrasensory. A depth tracker shows the reader’s descent among the ocean zones, from Sunlight to Twilight then Midnight and finally Dark. One can almost feel the pressure change pushing on the ears. The water is growing colder and the darkness blankets the light. It is time to climb into the submersible. Readers begin their trek seeing schools of fish, corals in different sizes, shapes and colors, and shipwrecks frozen in time. As the temperature plummets and darkness settles in, there are pulses of light coming from jellies and cuttlefish. A giant squid grabs onto the sub, but it is no match for a whale in hunt of its prey. At the very bottom, the ocean is barren. To survive, marine life filters small bits of food from the ocean floor. Natural phenomena—earthquakes, tsunamis, and seafloor chimneys—round out the story. The author includes web sites and additional source material for readers eager to learn more. Teachers will appreciate the glossary and index that accompany the text. This book would make a great addition to any classroom or library. Reviewer: Sherryn Craig
