Katy Perry - Children's Literature

The life story and rise to fame of the quirky pop star with gospel roots is covered in this book in the “Superstars!” series. Fans of the pop singer who grew up in Santa Barbara, CA, the daughter of strict and religious parents, learn that she was discovered at fifteen. At seventeen she moved to Los Angeles determined to make it in the music business. She worked hard to change her style and her sound and even changed her last name from Hudson to Perry, her mother’s maiden name, so that she would not be confused with the actress Kate Hudson. After three failed recording deals, she made it when she released her debut single on the Internet in 2007. By 2008 her first pop studio album was released and she has been soaring ever since. Colorful framed and captioned photos and a crowded-magazine-style layout with lots of pull-outs and sidebars work well for this celebrity biography. The singer’s career is followed into early 2012 with an indication of what’s to come in her future. Even with the nod to the future, the book’s shelf-life remains short. Catchy-sounding chapter headings, “She Said It” quotes on many pages, a timeline, glossary, find out more page, and index complete the volume. Reviewer: Margaret Orto
