Students of the Civil War are sometimes amazed by the fact that Confederate armies fought so effectively for so long and then simply crumbled in the final weeks of the war. In reality, despite the valor and elan of Confederate soldiers, the material mismatch that lay at the heart of the Civil War was so pronounced that it is actually amazing that it lasted as long as it did.
