Porsche - Children's Literature

One of the “Superstar Cars” series, this informational text introduces readers to Ferdinand Porsche’s dream sports car. Developed first in 1944, the car has undergone many variations but the name has always been associated with luxury sports cars. In 1948 the first sports car was built and since that time, the Porsche name has been associated with innovation and speed. Interestingly, it was a tractor that Porsche, Sr. was working on in the 1930’s and by the 1940’s the small, family garage in Stuttgart, Germany was called upon to help design equipment for the Third Reich. Surviving the war, they began building cars in the 1950s intentionally for American drivers, specifically the creation of the 1955 Porsche Speedster. Porsche has been part of the road racing circuit as well with a list of victories and achievements. The company has weathered economic downturns with new models and an eye to the future. In recent years Volkswagen has sought to go from collaborator to owner with a merger begun in 2009. The new Disney movie Cars 2 may bring about a renewed interest in international sports cars and certainly those who love that franchise will enjoy reading about the real cars that make up the sports car market. This sixty-four page book includes historical information, color photography, technical statistics, glossary, index and timeline. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson
