What is it? - Children's Literature

“Words to Know” is the first section in this early reader and it is really a picture glossary of nine words. The pictures are set on crisp white pages and fill the page. First readers see a cat and on the opposing page there is a hat and readers are asked what they see. The next spread presents a few prepositions. The cat is in the hat and on the hat. Readers next encounter a rat which is on the cat. That would seem a bit unlikely since they are natural predator and prey. Perhaps the choice was made due to the similar sound of the words—cat, hat, and rat. So it goes with a mouse and a house and a dog and a log.
