Major Battles of the War of 1812 - Children's Literature

Cover: Major Battles of the War of 1812

Did you know that the Battle of Lundy Lane was one of the bloodiest fights of the War of 1812? Are you aware that the Battle of New Orleans that made Andrew Jackson a public figure on the American scene was actually fought after the peace treaty ending the war had been signed? Did you realize that First Lady Dolly Madison actually wrote a letter to her sister while she was preparing to flee from the White House just before it was burnt by British troops? These, and many other fascinating tidbits of information are embodied in the forty-one pages of this volume in the “Documenting the War of 1812” series. The War of 1812 was fought in several regions of the United States, on Canadian soil, and at sea. In every theater there were misjudgments, heroism, human loss, and the clash of arms. The military engagements of the War of 1812 were both savage and little known to modern readers. In this illustrated title in the parent series, readers are offered concise summaries of the major battles of the war. While the coverage of these long past events is compact, the author does afford his readers an opportunity to get better acquainted with events that are generally overlooked. In the end, this introduction to the battles of the War of 1812 is well done and should spur greater interest in the broader subject of this generally neglected conflict. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
