Groups in the Garden - Booklist

Cover: Groups in the Garden

The Math Academy series (4 titles) gives readers a classroom experience by placing them among other students who are learning, in this case, about skip counting. Today, the class is in their garden, counting how many blueberries they’ve grown. As Robert keeps losing count of the hundreds of berries, student Zoe comes up with a new strategy: counting in groups! She (not the teacher) guides her classmates in utilizing hundreds charts to help with skip counting. They count by 2s, 5s, and 8s before finally tackling the blueberry problem, after which the teacher arrives to make a fruit salad. The colorful layout, use of narrative, and personable photographs for characters make this an engaging way to illustrate math concepts. A homework section in the back matter gives a chance to practice what you’ve learned.
